Most people know Tracy Morgan from his wild humor on TV, but in June 2014, his life nearly ended on a New Jersey highway. A Walmart truck driver who had gone without sleep for more than 24 hours slammed into Morgan’s limousine van on the turnpike.

The crash killed his friend James McNair and left Morgan fighting for his life.

Morgan suffered a traumatic brain injury, a broken leg, broken ribs, and a broken nose. He spent weeks in a coma and many more months in intensive rehabilitation.

Doctors were not sure he would ever fully recover.

Remarkably, Morgan pushed through the hardest stretch of his life and returned to stand-up comedy and acting. He hosted Saturday Night Live in 2015 and later starred in The Last O.G. on TBS.

His recovery became one of Hollywood’s most inspiring comeback stories.

2. Kanye West

Before Kanye West became one of the biggest names in music, he nearly did not make it past 2002. Late one night in Los Angeles, after finishing a recording session, West fell asleep at the wheel and crashed head-on into another vehicle.

The impact shattered his jaw in multiple places.

Surgeons wired his jaw shut to allow it to heal. Rather than staying quiet during recovery, West recorded the song “Through the Wire” while still unable to open his mouth properly.

The track became his debut single and launched his career in a way few artists ever experience.

The accident, instead of slowing him down, gave him a powerful story to share with the world. West has spoken openly about how that crash changed his perspective on life and music.

It turned a near tragedy into the starting point of a legendary career.

3. Travis Barker

On September 19, 2008, a Learjet carrying Travis Barker and several others crashed shortly after takeoff from Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina. The plane ran off the runway and burst into flames.

Only two people survived the crash, and Barker was one of them.

He suffered severe burns covering more than 65 percent of his body. The recovery was agonizing.

Barker underwent more than 20 surgeries and spent months in the hospital dealing with infections, skin grafts, and intense physical therapy. He later revealed he had contemplated ending his own life during the darkest parts of his recovery.

What carried him through was his love for his children and his passion for music. Barker eventually returned to drumming and performing with Blink-182.

He has since become one of the most recognized drummers in rock, and his survival story remains one of the most harrowing in music history.

4. Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone was at the peak of her career when her body turned against her in 2001. She woke up one morning with a severe headache and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered she had suffered a major brain hemorrhage.

A blood vessel had burst near the base of her skull.

The stroke lasted nine days and left her with serious neurological damage. Stone had to relearn how to walk, talk, and perform basic daily tasks.

She lost much of her career momentum during those years and faced significant financial and personal challenges during her recovery.

Stone wrote about her experience in her memoir and has spoken candidly about how the event reshaped her identity. She returned to acting and continued building her career with renewed purpose.

Her story stands as a reminder that health can change without warning, even for those at the top of their game.

5. Gloria Estefan

On March 20, 1990, Gloria Estefan’s tour bus was traveling through a snowstorm in Pennsylvania when a tractor-trailer rear-ended it at high speed. The collision was devastating.

Estefan was thrown from her bunk and her spine was fractured in the crash.

Doctors told her she would need major surgery and that her ability to walk again was uncertain. She underwent a six-hour operation in which surgeons inserted two titanium rods into her spine.

Recovery took over a year and required intense, daily physical therapy.

Estefan not only walked again but returned to performing. She headlined the 1991 American Music Awards just one year after the accident and went on to release multiple successful albums.

The song “Coming Out of the Dark” was written about her recovery and became a number-one hit. Her determination after that crash inspired millions of fans around the world.

6. Emilia Clarke

While filming the early seasons of Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke was dealing with something far more serious than dragon CGI. In 2011, just after finishing a workout at the gym, she collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

Doctors discovered she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of brain bleed that is fatal in about one-third of cases.

Clarke underwent emergency surgery and recovered, but in 2013, a routine scan revealed a second aneurysm was growing in her brain. She needed another operation, and this one was far more complicated.

She has described waking up unable to remember her own name.

Despite the fear and pain, Clarke returned to set each time and finished her run as Daenerys Targaryen. She later founded a charity called SameYou to support brain injury recovery.

Her openness about her health struggles has helped reduce the stigma around brain injuries worldwide.

7. Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford has cheated death more than once in the cockpit. The most talked-about incident happened in March 2015 when the small vintage plane he was piloting lost engine power shortly after takeoff from Santa Monica Airport.

Ford managed to make an emergency landing on a golf course, avoiding a residential neighborhood.

He suffered a broken pelvis, a broken ankle, and multiple lacerations. Doctors said his injuries were serious but that he was fortunate to be alive.

Ford was in his early 70s at the time, and the recovery took several months.

This was not his first aviation close call. He had experienced other incidents over the years, including a helicopter emergency and a near mid-air collision.

Ford has remained passionate about flying despite the risks. His calm under pressure during emergencies has drawn admiration from both aviation experts and fans alike.

8. 50 Cent

Before 50 Cent sold millions of records, he survived something most people do not walk away from. On May 24, 2000, he was sitting in a car in Queens, New York, when a gunman approached and opened fire.

He was shot nine times at close range, including in the jaw, hand, hip, and chest.

The wounds were critical. Surgeons worked to stabilize him, and he spent 13 days recovering in the hospital.

One bullet fragment remained lodged near his tongue, which permanently changed the way he spoke. Rather than slowing him down, the experience gave him a toughness and story that became central to his public image.

He was dropped by his record label after the shooting but kept recording. Eminem discovered his mixtapes and helped launch him to stardom. 50 Cent went on to build a music and business empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars, all starting from a moment he nearly did not survive.

9. Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler is known for playing tough, fearless characters on screen, but in 2011, he faced a genuinely frightening situation in real life. While filming the movie Chasing Mavericks, he was caught inside a massive wave at Mavericks surf break in Half Moon Bay, California.

The wave held him underwater and slammed him repeatedly against the ocean floor.

Butler was pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital. He had inhaled water and was treated for near-drowning.

Witnesses said the situation looked extremely serious, and he was lucky that rescue crews reached him quickly.

After recovering, Butler spoke about how the experience changed his relationship with fear and risk-taking. He returned to filming the movie and completed the project.

The incident gave him a deeper respect for the ocean and for the real surfers who inspired the story he was helping to bring to the screen.

10. Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne has lived a famously wild life, but one of his most dangerous moments happened on a quiet morning in 2003. He was riding an ATV on his English estate when the vehicle flipped and landed on top of him.

The crash was severe enough that his wife Sharon thought he might not survive.

Osbourne suffered a broken collarbone, eight broken ribs, a broken neck vertebra, and a collarbone that pierced a blood vessel. He was airlifted to a hospital and placed in intensive care.

His family later revealed that his injuries were far worse than initially reported to the public.

Recovery took several months and required multiple surgeries. Osbourne eventually returned to touring and recording music.

The accident is often cited as one of the turning points in his life, leading him to reflect more seriously on his health and longevity as a performer well into his later years.

11. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio has joked that he might be the luckiest man alive, and looking at his record, it is hard to argue. Over the years, he has survived a terrifying in-flight engine explosion on a commercial flight, a skydiving parachute malfunction that required emergency backup deployment, and a close encounter with a great white shark while cage diving off South Africa.

None of these incidents resulted in serious injury, but each one could have ended differently. DiCaprio has spoken openly about how these experiences reinforced his belief in fate and his commitment to making the most of his time on Earth.

His passion for environmental activism is often linked to these brushes with mortality. DiCaprio has said that surviving these moments made him feel a deeper responsibility toward the planet.

Whether on screen or in real life, he continues to take on challenges with a calm that his fans find both admirable and a little unbelievable.
