You know that feeling when a place everyone keeps buzzing about is finally almost here, and you start wondering how early is too early? Across North Carolina, some food fans are already talking about showing up ahead of the crowd for a grocery store opening.
It sounds silly until you picture the snacks, the folding chairs, and the neighbors swapping stories in the dark. Here is what is known so far, and what is still a big question mark.
Wegmans’ first Charlotte store is set to open in Ballantyne

Mark the calendar: Wegmans’ first Charlotte location is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The store sits at 11550 North Community House Road in the Ballantyne area.
Some numbers help set the scene. Wegmans’ store fact sheet lists the building at about 110,000 square feet, with 664 surface-lot parking spaces.
Those are simply facts about the store. They are not a promise that any of those spaces will be open to overnight visitors or opening-day crowds.
As of October 10, the big day is still a few days away.
Fans are talking about arriving early

Superfans have been chatting about lining up for months. Back in July, WFAE reported on fans getting ready and discussing camping and queuing for the first Charlotte store.
Closer to opening, Axios Charlotte’s October 9 coverage mentions tents and lines. Tents are that reporting’s expectation, not an announced rule.
So far, this is talk and planning. Nobody can say yet how many people will actually turn up.
What Wegmans has said about overnight access

Here is the practical part. According to a Charlotte Observer report republished by AOL, Wegmans will let fans into the parking lot before opening.
The company also plans extra staff and portable restrooms for people staying overnight.
That is real help for early birds. Still, it answers only part of the puzzle.
Nothing in that reporting says tents are approved, that parking will be available for everyone, or that each visitor can set up however they like. Think of it as a welcome mat, not a guarantee.
Raleigh’s opening is context, not a Charlotte forecast

Rewind to 2019, when North Carolina got its first Wegmans in Raleigh. WRAL reported that an estimated 3,000 people waited for that opening, and some arrived the evening before.
That is a fun look at how excited a town can get over a supermarket. It belongs to Raleigh, though.
Charlotte is a different city with a different store and a different day, so that number is no prediction here. Crowd size in Ballantyne is simply unknown.
Traffic guidance remains limited

Expect busy roads. Wegmans told the Observer it anticipates heavy traffic during opening week, as noted in that republished report.
The company is coordinating with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and city transportation officials. Law enforcement is expected to help direct traffic, and plans may be adjusted if needed.
What coverage does not offer is an official arrival time or a recommended route. Easy parking is not promised either.
The safest move is to follow posted signs and staff directions once you get close.
The overnight crowd is still an unknown

Some pieces are settled. Reporting from the Charlotte Observer points to pre-opening lot access, extra staff, and portable restrooms for overnight guests.
Other pieces are open. Turnout is a guess, tent permission has not been spelled out, and Axios Charlotte’s mention of tents is its own reporting.
Whether any one visitor finds a parking spot or a place to stay is unclear.
With opening still days away, follow posted signs and staff guidance instead of counting on a spot. Sometimes the best part of a line is simply not knowing who you will meet in it.
