One of my favorite barbecue finds in Florida shares a roof with gas pumps and opens at 6 in the morning. Another sits next to seed spreaders and hand files.
That combination makes me ridiculously happy. These are working country stores, the kind that sell propane, candy bars, and canned goods.
Then somebody fires up a smoker out back, and the whole place changes personality.
I love the idea of pulling off a two-lane highway for a snack and leaving with brisket. Some of these stops serve breakfast biscuits before sunrise.
One sits in a stretch where the next store is miles away in either direction. Another has rocking chairs on a porch along a canopy road.
So here’s my question. How many times have you driven past a little country store without a second look?
After this list, I bet you’ll start tapping the brakes.
1. Pearl Country Store & Barbecue

Gas pumps out front, brisket inside, and glass-bottle Coke in the cooler. Few pit stops along US-441 deliver that kind of plot twist.
The store sits just outside Micanopy, a small Alachua County town south of Gainesville. It works as a country store and gas station, with a barbecue counter that pulls the real crowd.
Brisket is the headliner here, and the kitchen serves it in generous portions. Pork ribs earn equal billing, and rotisserie smoked chicken rounds out the meat lineup.
Sides hold their own too. You’ll find slaw and macaroni and cheese, plus homemade desserts for anyone saving room.
Early risers, take note. Doors open at 6 AM daily, and breakfast and coffee are part of the deal.
Shelves also carry locally sourced products, so you can grab something to take home. It’s counter service, casual, and quick, with outdoor seating if the weather cooperates.
Address: 106 NE Hwy 441 A, Micanopy, FL 32667
2. Carter’s Grocery

Need a seed spreader and a rack of ribs on the same errand? Out on Orange Avenue west of Fort Pierce, that’s a completely normal shopping list.
Carter’s Grocery is an old-school general store in rural, agricultural St. Lucie County. Shelves run from candy bars to hardware like hand files and spreaders.
The smoker announces itself before you reach the door. Inside, a huge glass case holds smoked chicken, ribs, pulled pork, shrimp, vegetables, and mac and cheese.
Brisket and fried chicken join the lineup, along with fried catfish. It’s home-cooked Southern food, served from a store that feels like a throwback.
Timing matters here. The doors open at 5 AM most days, but Sunday hours end at 2 PM, so plan your weekend run accordingly.
Address: 15901 Orange Ave, Fort Pierce, FL 34945
3. Kenansville Country Store

Fifteen miles one way and twenty the other. That’s roughly how far you’d drive to find another store and gas station from this lonely Osceola County stop.
Kenansville is a tiny ranching community along US-441, and the country store here does a lot of heavy lifting. It’s a hardware store, a gas station, and a barbecue stop rolled into one building.
Shoppers describe the place as clean, well stocked, and run by friendly folks. Out here, that combination counts for plenty.
Think of it as the reliable friend on a long, empty drive. You can fill the tank, grab what you forgot, and find barbecue too.
Hours stretch late for such a rural spot, until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday mornings start a little later, at 8 AM.
Address: 50 S Kenansville Rd, Kenansville, FL 34739
4. Carter’s Country Store

Breakfast at 4 AM is a bold promise. On weekdays, this Lake Panasoffkee store opens its doors before most roosters clear their throats.
Morning brings biscuits and gravy plus sausage and egg biscuits. Come lunchtime, the menu shifts to pulled pork sandwiches and burgers.
The building pulls double duty as a full-service fuel stop. You’ll find diesel, ethanol-free gas, propane exchange, an ATM, and an air pump.
That ethanol-free fuel is handy for boaters heading toward Lake Panasoffkee. The setting is rural Sumter County, with a relaxed country feel and friendly folks behind the counter.
Curious about snacks? It’s known as the only spot in town carrying possum peckers, a name that alone deserves a road trip.
Address: 7018 County Rd 470, Lake Panasoffkee, FL 33538
5. Buddy Boy’s Country Store

St. Augustine usually means forts and cobblestones. Head west on County Road 13, though, and the oldest city trades history lessons for smoked meat.
Buddy Boy’s sits along the rural River Road corridor in western St. Johns County. It’s a country-style gas station and convenience store with a serious food side.
Prepared smoked meats and fried chicken are the main draw. There’s also a buffet, which makes choosing just one thing a lot less stressful.
Shelves come packed with country products. You’ll spot candy, meats, and jerky, so the snack bag for the drive home basically fills itself.
Practical perks include diesel, propane exchange, an ATM, and an air pump. Early birds can stop by starting at 5 AM on weekdays.
Address: 8430 County Rd 13 N, St. Augustine, FL 32092
6. Bradley’s Country Store

Rocking chairs, a front porch, and a sausage dog in hand. Some lunches feel like they belong to another century, and this one proudly does.
Bradley’s Country Store sits on Centerville Road, a canopy road northeast of Tallahassee. Live oaks shade the drive, which makes the trip part of the reward.
Sausage is the star here. The historic store and butcher shop sells artisanal smoked and fresh sausage, and the footlong sausage dogs are a porch favorite.
Ribs earn praise too. Inside, the shelves hold canned goods, toys, and trinkets alongside the butcher counter.
Plan around the schedule, since Bradley’s keeps shorter hours than the other stops on this list. It’s open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and closed Sundays.
For a slow Panhandle afternoon in Florida, few drives end this well.
Address: 10655 Centerville Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32309
