1. North Fork Mountain Inn, Cabins, and Cottages, Cabins, West Virginia
Few places in West Virginia earn the title of true hideaway quite like North Fork Mountain Inn, tucked into the Potomac Highlands with Smoke Hole Canyon spread out below and Monongahela National Forest right next door.
Guests can choose from rooms, suites, and individual cabins, with some featuring fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Pet-friendly cabins are available for those traveling with animal companions.
The kitchen takes a farm-to-table approach, sourcing local beef, lamb, herbs, and produce from the Potomac Highlands. Picnic lunches and hot handhelds cater to hikers heading out for the day.
Direct access to the North Fork Mountain Trail puts one of West Virginia’s premier hiking routes right at the doorstep. Fishing along the South Branch of the Potomac River and stargazing from the deck’s hot tub round out the evening options.

2. Canaan Valley Resort State Park Cabins, Davis, West Virginia
West Virginia’s first ski resort opened its slopes in 1971, and Canaan Valley Resort State Park has been building on that legacy ever since, now offering 34 vacation cabins spread across a high Allegheny plateau half a mile from the main lodge.
Guests can choose from two, three, and four-bedroom cabins and cottages. Eleven units are pet-friendly, and two cottages meet ADA accessibility standards.
Every cabin includes a wood-burning fireplace, furnished kitchen, outdoor grill, fire pit, flat-screen TV, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Firewood is provided, and linen exchange is available at the lodge’s front desk.
The resort’s amenities add serious value to the cabin experience. An indoor pool, ski slopes with 47 trails, a championship golf course rated four stars by Golf Digest, and a snow tubing park with a 1,200-foot run keep guests busy across all four seasons.
Scenic chairlift rides, geocaching across seven hidden sites, and a climbing wall round out the activity list nicely.
3. Stonewall Resort Cottages, Roanoke, West Virginia
Stonewall Resort holds the distinction of being the nation’s first state park developed through a public-private partnership, a model that has clearly paid off judging by the quality of its lakeside cottages on Stonewall Jackson Lake.
Classic cottages feature vaulted ceilings, exposed cedar post and beam framing, stacked stone gas fireplaces, hardwood floors, and fully equipped kitchens. Each includes a washer and dryer, HD televisions, and a private deck with a gas grill.

4. Pipestem Resort State Park Cabins, Pipestem, West Virginia
Named after the native meadowsweet plant whose hollowed twigs were historically used as tobacco pipes, Pipestem Resort State Park opened on Memorial Day in 1970 and has been stacking up reasons to visit ever since.
Twenty-six fully equipped cabins sit along the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge. Two, three, and four-bedroom configurations are available, with pet-friendly options included. Each unit comes with a full kitchen, fireplace, cable TV, central heating and air, outdoor grill, fire ring, and wireless internet.
The activity list here is genuinely impressive. Nine ziplines, a cable bridge, and a 1,600-foot final zip make up the Pipestem Peaks Zipline Tour. An 18-hole championship golf course, axe throwing, 3D archery, laser tag, and skeet shooting cover the land-based options.
The park’s famous aerial tramway descends 3,600 feet to the Mountain Creek Lodge at the gorge floor. Over 25 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, horseback riding, and fishing in the Bluestone River fill out the itinerary nicely.
5. Chief Logan Lodge Cabins, Logan, West Virginia
Chief Logan State Park carries its history seriously, named after a respected Mingo Native American leader and home to a “Bias Cabin” built in the 1800s that was relocated to the park in the 1990s as a living piece of Appalachian heritage.
The park offers three four-room cabins, with one meeting ADA accessibility standards. Each features spacious living areas, mountain views from the porch, and is stocked with West Virginia-made products including Homer Laughlin china and Wild Mountain Soap.
Cabin guests have full access to Chief Logan Lodge’s restaurant, indoor pool, hot tub, fitness room, and a coffee bar in the lobby. The Recreation Center adds an elevated walking track, a sports shop, and multipurpose areas.
Over 18 miles of hiking trails wind through the park, including the Coal Mine Trail and the Waterfall Trail. Chief Logan Lake is stocked for fishing, and a wildlife center houses bobcats and black bears.
Access to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System puts over 600 miles of off-roading territory within easy reach.
6. Cacapon Resort State Park Lodge, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia
Built on land originally shaped by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, Cacapon Resort State Park Lodge formally opened on July 1, 1937, and the CCC’s craftsmanship earned the park a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The newest lodge in the West Virginia State Parks system offers 120 rooms split between a renovated original building and a newer wing. King and Double Queen configurations are available, many with mountain or golf course views. Pet-friendly rooms are part of the lineup.
Beyond the main lodge, 13 year-round cabins and 18 seasonal Legacy and Economy cabins provide alternatives for those wanting more space. “The Old Inn,” built by the CCC, accommodates up to 32 guests and suits reunions or group stays perfectly.
Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the 18-hole championship golf course on site. A $3.5 million mountain biking park, Healing Waters Spa, 23 miles of hiking trails, and two stocked fishing lakes round out the offerings.
7. Bavarian Inn Resort & Brewing Company, Shepherdstown, West Virginia
Perched on an 11-acre bluff above the Potomac River and managed by the Asam family for over 45 years, the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown brings a distinctly European sensibility to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
Seventy-two luxury rooms and suites are spread across Alpine-style chalets and the historic 1930-built Grey Stone Manor. Many feature gas fireplaces or whirlpool tubs, and Royal and Presidential Suites include double-sized Jacuzzi bathtubs. 8. Hawks Nest State Park Lodge, Ansted, West Virginia
Designed by Walter Gropius’s architectural firm and constructed in 1967, Hawks Nest State Park Lodge sits 750 feet above the New River Gorge, which means the views from the balconies are not exactly subtle.
A $7 million renovation project launched in 2020 updated lodge rooms and restored historic CCC buildings dating back to 1935. The lodge now offers 30 rooms, many with balconies or patios overlooking the gorge or surrounding forest. Two pet-friendly rooms accommodate animals under 50 pounds.
The Overlook on the New River Gorge Restaurant frames the canyon through large windows, making it one of the more dramatic dining settings in the state. An outdoor pool, spacious lobby with a fireplace, and gift shop round out the on-site amenities.
Seven miles of hiking trails, seasonal jet boat tours on the New River, and access to guided bridge walks on the New River Gorge Bridge keep guests occupied. Whitewater rafting outfitters operate nearby on both the New and Gauley Rivers.
9. Wilson Lodge at Oglebay Resort, Wheeling, West Virginia
Industrialist Earl W. Oglebay willed his Waddington Farm estate to the city of Wheeling in 1926, and what grew from that gift is now one of the most well-rounded resort destinations in the entire mid-Atlantic region.
Wilson Lodge opened in 1957 and completed a major renovation in 2024 that refreshed its entrance, lobby, and dining areas. 10. Twin Falls Resort State Park Lodge, Mullens, West Virginia
The park gets its name from two waterfalls, Foley Falls and Black Fork Falls, located roughly half a mile apart within its 3,776 acres, and the mountaintop setting delivers the kind of quiet that reminds visitors how loud regular life actually is.
Twin Falls Resort State Park Lodge completed a major renovation in 2011 adding 27 rooms, an indoor pool, and a fitness center to its original 1970 structure. The lodge now offers 47 rooms in configurations ranging from standard doubles to King Jacuzzi Suites with sofa beds. Pet-friendly rooms are available on designated floors.
The Twin Falls Restaurant overlooks the golf course and mountains and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner year-round. Guests can also check out horseshoes, basketballs, and badminton equipment from the front desk at no extra charge.
Fourteen secluded vacation cabins provide an alternative to lodge rooms for those wanting more privacy. Over 25 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, an 18-hole golf course, and a pioneer homestead with a cabin built in 1835 add historical and recreational depth.
11. North Bend State Park Lodge, Cairo, West Virginia
The park takes its name from the distinctive horseshoe curve of the North Fork of the Hughes River, and its history stretches back to 1951 when land acquisition began, with the lodge itself opening in 1966 to serve what would become a beloved rural escape in Ritchie County.
The lodge offers 29 guest rooms equipped with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, hair dryers, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Some rooms include private balconies, and a lobby kitchenette provides a microwave and coffee station for early risers. Pets are permitted in the lodge for a flat fee.
Nine solid cedar vacation cabins on a secluded ridge within a white pine forest offer a quieter alternative. These year-round cabins feature fireplaces, central heating and air, and configurations from two to four bedrooms, with pet-friendly options available.
The 72-mile North Bend Rail Trail is the park’s centerpiece, following an old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad corridor through 10 tunnels and across 36 bridges. North Bend Lake provides fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, and musky, with boat rentals available from North Bend Outfitters.
12. Capon Springs and Farms, High View, West Virginia
The natural mineral spring at the heart of this 4,700-acre Hampshire County property was first discovered in the late 1760s, and the water has been flowing at a consistent 65 degrees ever since, once favored by the U.S. Congress and U.S. Olympic teams.
Capon Springs and Farms has operated as a multi-generational family resort since 1932 and now accommodates guests across 14 unique cottages and a main building totaling 115 to 119 rooms. A restored log cabin and a Honeymoon Cottage serve couples well. Rooms have no in-room phones, TVs, or internet, which is the whole point.
The all-inclusive rate covers three home-cooked family-style meals daily plus morning and evening snacks. Monday night chicken barbecue and Saturday mac and cheese have become traditions guests plan their trips around.
