What to Expect When Camping in Sedona

As you start researching where to camp in Sedona you will likely find that it’s not the easiest place to camp. The beautiful red rocks, amazing hiking trails, warm weather and so much more make it a popular destination.

But the good news is that while it may not be the easiest place to camp, Sedona campgrounds are not the only option. Sedona actually offers a variety of camping options including Forest Service campgrounds, Private Campgrounds, and Dispersed or Free Camping.

Here are our top tips for finding the best camping in Sedona AZ:

  • Make your reservations early. Most of the US Forest Service campgrounds north of Sedona along Highway 89A allow you to book up to 6 months in advance on a rolling calendar. Claim a spot as early as you can.
  • Look outside of town. Most of the campgrounds in the Sedona area are about a 30-minute drive. Consider checking the campgrounds in the Cottonwood or Cornville areas.
  • Dispersed camping is now limited to only designated campsites. Be sure to check the Forest Service rules before setting up camp.
  • Most of the area immediately around Sedona is privately owned and not available for overnight camping so be sure to stick to the designated areas only.

Sedona RV Parks

RV parks in Sedona AZ are an excellent option for anyone with a larger rig or campers who aren’t set up for dispersed camping.

RV parks can also be a better option if you plan on staying in the area for a while. Because let’s be honest, camping out in the wilderness is awesome, but if you’re going to be there a few weeks, Sedona campgrounds with showers can be a bit more comfortable.

A shower is something that you will never get at dispersed camping and rarely get at a Forest Service campground.

There are a few Sedona RV campgrounds that are right in town (which we talk about below) but most are located a little bit outside of town.

Since the RV camping in town can be pretty limited it’s a good idea to also check out some of the RV parks near Sedona, AZ. Most of these are centered around Cornville, Arizona which is only about 30 minutes from Sedona.

Here are our top 5 picks of the best RV camping Sedona has to offer:

1. Rancho Sedona RV Park

Why you should camp here: Walking distance to lots of Sedona attractions.

  • Distance from Sedona: In Town
  • Reservations accepted: Yes
  • Campsite Type: RV Only (Big Rig Friendly)
  • RV Hookups: Full Hookup & Water/Electric only sites
  • Cell Service: Verizon, AT&T & T-Mobile

Rancho Sedona RV Park is one of the best Sedona RV parks and a great option if you want to be right in town.

They are within walking distance from some amazing shops/restaurants and viewpoints to watch a spectacular Sedona sunset.

You will have great cell service since it’s right in town. They also have several big sites available if you’re going to be camping in a big rig.

But since it’s a great location and a beautiful shaded park right on Oak Creek, they often book up very far in advance so we recommend making a reservation as soon as you possibly can.

2. Oak Creek Mobilodge

Why you should camp here: In town, but less expensive than Rancho Sedona RV Park

  • Distance from Sedona: In Town
  • Reservations accepted: Yes
  • Campsite Type: RV (36 Feet Max)
  • RV Hookups: Full Hookups
  • Cell Service: Verizon, AT&T & T-Mobile

RV camping in Sedona can be very expensive, especially if you’re going to be in town. But if you’re looking for all of the conveniences of Rancho Sedona RV Park but need to save a little money then we recommend checking out Oak Creek Mobilodge.

It’s right down the street from Rancho Sedona but you can get a full hookup RV site for about what you would pay for water and electricity only at Rancho Sedona.

On top of that, most of the “best campgrounds in Sedona AZ” that you’ll find on the internet aren’t actually in Sedona, they’re just close by. But Oak Creek Mobilodge is right in town!

But make a reservation as soon as you can because it is a great location and they only have 7 spots.

3. Page Springs RV Park

Why you should camp here: Near lots of Sedona wineries.

  • Distance from Sedona: 14 Miles (Cornville, AZ)
  • Reservations accepted: Yes
  • Campsite Type: Tent Sites & RV Sites
  • RV Hookups: Full Hookup & Water/Electric only sites

Just North of Cornville on Page Springs Rd is where you will find many of the wineries in the area! And Page Springs RV Park is going to be the closest RV park to them. It’s even within walking distance of the Up The Creek Bistro Wine Bar.

They have lots of sites and some of the tent sites are even right on Oak Creek. But if you’re coming in with a big rig then be sure to call ahead because many of the RV pads are very narrow.

Page Springs RV Park is a great option if you have a group and there will be a mix of RV campers and tent campers since many of the RV parks in the Sedona area do not have both.

The drive from Sedona to Page Springs RV park is also one of the prettiest scenic drives in Sedona as well so you’ll be in for a treat!

4. Mountain Vu RV Park

Why you should camp here: Located right in Cornville.

  • Distance from Sedona: 19 Miles (Cornville, AZ)
  • Reservations accepted: Yes

It is located right in the heart of Cornville Arizona which puts it within walking distance of lots of restaurants and shops. And only about a 20-minute drive from downtown Sedona.

Now to be fair, all of the convenience does come at a cost. If you’re looking to be close to Oak Creek or surrounded by nature then Mountian Vu is probably not the park for you.

But if you’re looking for a place where you can set up a home base for a while and take excursions out into nature then you really can’t go wrong with the friendly staff and great location of Mountian Vu.

5. Lo Lo Mai Springs Outdoor Resort

Why you should camp here: RV Sites, Tent Sites, and Cabins are available

  • Distance from Sedona:14 Miles (Cornville, AZ)
  • Reservations accepted: Yes
  • Campsite Type: RV, Tents & Cabins
  • RV Hookups: Full Hookup & Water/Electric only sites
  • Cell Service: No

One of the last great RV parks near Sedona AZ would be Lo Lo Mai Springs. If you’re looking for camping near Sedona that offers variety in accommodation then Lo Lo Mai Springs is the place to go.

While most of the RV parks in Sedona and the surrounding area offer RV or tent sites, Lo Lo Mai Springs also has cabins that are great for larger groups or family trips where not everyone is so excited about the idea of sleeping in a camper or in a tent.

Lo Lo Mai Springs covers nearly ¾ of a mile along the banks of Oak Creek and many of the sites are very close to if not right on the water.

They have every combination of RV full hookup, water & electric, and tent options that you would possibly imagine making them a great choice no matter what amenities you’re looking for.

Forest Service Sedona Campgrounds

Out of all of the Sedona camping options the Forest Service campgrounds are (in our opinion) some of the best. We’re big fans of the U.S. Forest Service and so whenever we have the opportunity to stay in one of their campgrounds we normally do.

In the Sedona area, most (if not all) of the Forest Service campgrounds are located north of Sedona along Highway 89A.

They follow all along Oak Creek, which means that most of them not only have riverfront campsites but also have more shade trees than some other camping in Sedona Arizona options.

You can make reservations for any of them through Recreation.gov and we would highly recommend that you not only make a reservation but do so as soon as possible because the U.S. Forest Service campgrounds normally book up pretty far in advance.

They’re all very well maintained but the amenities (such as toilets and showers) vary from one to the next so be sure to check each campground on Recreation.gov to see what you’ll have when you get there!

Since you’ll most likely be without AC, staying at these campsites is best when you’re visiting Sedona in the fall or spring when the weather is cooler.

6. Manzanita Campground

Why you should camp here: Very Close to Slide Rock. Gorgeous sites!

  • Distance from Sedona: 6 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: Yes
  • Campsite Type: Tent only
  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon & AT&T (1 Bar or Less)

Tent camping in Sedona can be a great way to maximize your time in nature, and if you’re not coming in an RV then the Manzanita campground is an excellent option. The Manzanita Campground is operated by the U.S. Forest Service and is along Oak Creek and is very well maintained.

If you’re planning on visiting Slide Rock State Park while you’re in the area (which we highly recommend!) just know that there isn’t any Slide Rock State Park camping BUT Manzanita Campground is less than a mile down the road making it a great option for a place to set up camp.

This is also a great campground to stay at if you’re planning a Sedona to Antelope Canyon road trip during your time in the area.

7. Cave Springs Campground

Why you should camp here: Lots of sites (84 Campsites)

  • Distance from Sedona: 11 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: Yes
  • Campsite Type: Mostly RV with 1 Tent Only Site (Max RV length 36 Feet)
  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon & AT&T

Cave Springs is one of the larger campsites Sedona has to offer. There are 84 sites which means it’s a good campground to check out if you’re having trouble finding availability somewhere else.

It is a little bit further north of Sedona but at 11 miles it’s still only a short 20-minute drive into the heart of Sedona.

They have lots of RV sites and can accommodate rigs up to 36 feet, but they don’t have any RV hookups available so be prepared to dry camp.

Cave Springs campground is also located in a nice shady area of ponderosa pines which can be really nice during the hotter months of the year. Cave Springs is also one of only a handful of Forest Service Sedona campgrounds with showers.

All of the sites can accommodate a tent and most are available for RV use as well. However, they do not have any RV hookups so be prepared to dry camp.

This campground is absolutely gorgeous and we ended up extending our time there to the full 7 days because we loved it so much.

Do be aware that the main road is very close to the campsites, but honestly, it didn’t bother us at all during our stay.

Other Campgrounds Near Sedona

Sedona campgrounds are pretty limited and the few campgrounds that are located close to Sedona often fill up far in advance. But there are lots more options if you’re willing to drive, especially in the Cottonwood area.

Free Camping in Sedona

Free camping in Sedona has changed quite a lot in the last few years. With the huge surplus of van lifers and jobs that have switched to remote work, tons of people have started flocking to the Sedona area as a place to set up camp for a while.

Unfortunately, many of these campers have not been caring for the places where they camp so to reduce the environmental impact, the US Forest Service recently instituted new rules in the Sedona area that require all campers to camp only in designated camping spots even in the dispersed camping areas.

This means that you must be 100% self-contained and you must camp in one of the designated campsites that are marked by a little sign.

It’s also super important to follow Leave No Trace practices while you camp to avoid these areas being shut down completely.

You can read more about the official US Forest Services rules in this pamphlet about the Coconino National Forest area.

16. Forest Road 525 (Loy Butte Road)

  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon AT&T & T-Mobile

Forest Road 525 also known as Loy Butte Road is home to several dispersed camping sites known as Surprise and Windmill Designated Dispersed Camping. Loy Butte is only 10 miles outside of Sedona off of Highway 89A making it by far one of the closest spots for free camping in Sedona AZ.

But be warned because it is free and so close to town it is often VERY busy. You are also only allowed to camp in designated spots so we highly recommend arriving early and during the week if possible.

But if you can snag a spot here, you’re going to be in for a treat to be able to watch an incredible sunrise over the Sedona red rocks right from your camper.

17. Forest Road 89B (Angel Valley Road)

Why you should camp here: Two large areas for camping

  • Distance from Sedona: 12 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: No
  • Campsite Type: Dispersed Camping/Boondocking
  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon (Limited)

Angel Valley Road is one of the great free campsites in Sedona. The actual name of the road is Forest Road 89B and the area is under the management of the U.S. Forest Service.

It is about a 25-minute drive to downtown Sedona which makes it far enough to really be out in nature but close enough that you can still get to everything in no time at all!

There are two designated areas for camping so you will likely still be around some other campers and if you have a big rig then you might want to look for another spot since the road is pretty rough and there are not many good places to turn around.

18. Schnebly Hill Dispersed

Why you should camp here: Easy Access to the Highway

  • Distance from Sedona: 37 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: No
  • Campsite Type: Dispersed Camping/Boondocking
  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon AT&T & T-Mobile

Sedona free camping often comes with its pros and cons and the Schnebly Hill Dispersed area is no exception. The camping area is very close to the highway which is great if you’re looking for an easy quick place to stop.

But it’s also close to the highway which means there will be noise both day and night. This area is also frequently used by ATVs which adds even more to the noise.

That being said if you’re okay with a little noise and want to save some money or simply looking for a place to overnight then Schnebly Hill is a great option!

19. Forest Road 237 (Pumphouse Wash)

Why you should camp here: Good Stopping Point Between Flagstaff and Sedona

  • Distance from Sedona: 18 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: No
  • Campsite Type: Dispersed Camping/Boondocking

While Sedona dispersed camping can be rather limited the closer to Flagstaff AZ that you get the more options you will have. Pumphouse Wash is one of those places. It’s about 18 miles North of Sedona and it’s an easy drive down 89A the rest of the way into town.

This is a great option for anyone who flies into Flagstaff and rents an RV from there, as Flagstaff is the closest airport to Sedona.

Be sure to remember to follow Leave No Trace practices whenever you’re dispersed camping, this area, in particular, has not been well taken care of in recent times so be sure to do your part and leave the area better than you found it.

20. Forest Road 535

Why you should camp here: Good Cell Reception

  • Distance from Sedona: 18 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: No
  • Campsite Type: Dispersed Camping/Boondocking
  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon AT&T & T-Mobile

Forest Road 535 is a good option if you’re coming from Flagstaff since you’ll be going right past it. Dispersed camping near Sedona is often very busy and this spot is no different.

On the weekends it can get very busy but if you’re looking for a quick place to stop or will be coming in during the week then it can be a good choice.

The road in is rather rough so it’s likely not a good option if you have a big rig. Always remember to scout ahead to avoid getting stuck without any way to turn back around.

21. Forest Road 618, 689, & Soda Springs Road

Why you should camp here: It’s quiet and fairly easy to get to.

  • Distance from Sedona: 17 Miles
  • Reservations accepted: No
  • Campsite Type: Dispersed Camping/Boondocking
  • RV Hookups: No
  • Cell Service: Verizon

Soda Springs Road is south of Sedona just past I-17. Most of the free campsites Sedona has are located North of town so this can be a great spot to check if all of those areas are full. There is some cell reception if you need to work, but service is far from reliable so having a cell booster is a good idea.

This is where we found a spot to camp when we visited Sedona. It wasn’t crowded at all, but the drive into town was a bit far. Overall, it was a good place to boondock and we would go back!

You are only allowed to camp in the designated spots that have fire rings so be sure to look around and make sure that you’re not setting up camp just anywhere.
