Some of my favorite fall memories started with a gravel driveway, a hand-painted sign, and the smell of sugar drifting out of a little barn. You show up expecting a quick bag of apples and leave with sticky fingers, a full belly, and plans to come back next weekend.

Minnesota grows some of the crispest apples around, and our family orchards prove you do not need a big city to have a world-class day out. Grab your jacket, because these seven spots are worth every mile of the drive.

1. Ferguson’s Minnesota Harvest, Jordan, MN

Big dreams need big orchards, and this one claims the title of the largest pick-your-own apple orchard in Minnesota. Rows stretch out farther than little legs can walk in one go, so plan for a full afternoon.

The Ferguson family took over in 2022, and the place still feels proudly family-owned and family-farmed.

Start in the orchard, then work your way through the pumpkin patch, corn maze, and giant attractions area. Kids tend to burn through energy here fast, which makes the next stop extra sweet.

The bakery is famous for its apple cider donuts, and they are the kind of warm treat you finish before reaching the car.

Hours typically run 10 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and 9:30 AM to 6 PM on weekends. Parking is in a paid lot, so budget a little extra.

With a country store to browse too, Jordan easily rivals any big-city fall festival.

2. Aamodt’s Apple Farm, Stillwater, MN

Goats, wagons, and Honeycrisp dreams. Few orchards blend old-school farm charm with simple family fun quite like this longstanding Stillwater favorite, where generations of Minnesotans have made a fall trip part of their yearly routine.

Picking your own apples is the main event, and it rarely feels like a chore. Hop on a wagon ride to see the grounds, then swing by the goat farm for a few giggles.

Staff members are known for being warm and welcoming, which adds to the small-town feel.

Hungry? The apple cider donuts here have a loyal following, and the food overall is a real highlight.

Plenty of spots on the property invite you to sit, relax, and share a snack with friends.

Dogs are allowed, so the whole crew can come along. The farm is usually open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, just a short scenic drive from the Twin Cities.

3. Pleasant Valley Orchard and Cidery, Shafer, MN

Out in Chisago County, where country roads wind past farm fields, you will find a laid-back orchard that feels like a well-kept secret. No flashy crowds, just good apples and a friendly barn store.

Here is a tip worth knowing before you go. The apple varieties ready for picking often change through the season, so call ahead if you have your heart set on a certain kind.

If you are flexible, try whatever is ripe, because local apples picked at their peak are hard to beat.

After filling your bag, head to the barn store for apple donuts. Brats are often on the menu too, making for a hearty Minnesota-style snack.

Families can also wander into the pumpkin patch and pick a jack-o-lantern straight from the vine.

Dogs are welcome, and the orchard typically opens daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. It is a relaxed, honest small-town stop.

4. Country Blossom Farm, LLC, Alexandria, MN

Lake country is not just for summer. Up near Alexandria, a family-run orchard that opened in 2010 turns fall into one long, happy weekend for kids and grown-ups alike.

Activities seem to pop up around every corner. A corn maze, bazooka ball, and a bouncy pad keep young ones busy, while parents enjoy the pretty property and the friendly staff.

Apples are ready for u-pick in autumn, and raspberries may be available for picking too.

Then comes the bakery, which might be the real reason people drive up from the Cities. Expect donuts, cookies, hand pies, and homemade treats like lemon pie, plus fresh-pressed hot apple cider on chilly days.

A jar of honey barbecue sauce makes a fun souvenir.

The farm is usually open Thursday through Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM, with free parking. Order holiday pies early, since they go fast.

5. Whistling Well Farm, Hastings, MN

Picture a red barn, rows of bright mums, and a fiddle tune floating over the St. Croix River Valley. That is the cozy scene waiting just south of the Twin Cities.

Apples come two ways here. You can pick your own or grab a bag already picked for you, which is handy for anyone short on time or energy.

Pumpkins and gourds fill out the harvest, and the mums make a lovely front-porch upgrade.

Little ones usually head straight for the goats and other cute farm animals. On many weekends, live music adds a festive soundtrack to the day.

Of course, the apple cider donuts deserve their own moment. Warm, sweet, and perfect with the river valley views, they turn a quick stop into a lingering one.

The main farm generally runs Thursday through Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM, while the Red Barn store may open daily. Dogs are welcome, even inside.

6. Everly Farms Minnesota, Minnetrista, MN

Mini donuts, mini tractors, and maximum smiles. Everly Farms leans into family fun out in western Hennepin County, and it does it with real charm.

Pick-your-own apples are the anchor, but the extras make it special. Kids can steer mini-tractors, visit the petting zoo, and climb aboard a hayride across the farm.

The handmade donuts are a big draw, especially the mini cider donuts paired with hot cider or hot chocolate.

Dog owners, take note. Pups are allowed, so your four-legged friend can tag along through the orchard rows.

Live music sometimes plays too, giving the farm a lively, community feel.

One standout detail is the late hours. From Wednesday through Sunday, the farm often stays open until 9 PM, perfect for a sunset visit after work or school.

Monday and Tuesday usually wrap up at 5 PM. Grandparents, parents, and kids all find something to love here.

Caramel apples on the end rack might be the best-kept secret in Delano. Apple Jack Orchards has long been a go-to fall stop west of the Twin Cities, mixing classic farm fun with a well-stocked shop.

Seasonal apple picking is the star, along with wagon rides and a corn maze that can keep a family busy for hours. Pricing for picking may include a per-person fee plus apples by the pound, so check the website before heading out.

Save room for the bakery corner. Homemade apple turnovers, apple donuts, and those glossy caramel apples are classic treats that taste like a Minnesota autumn.

The shop also sells local produce, making it easy to stock up for pies at home.

Free parking keeps things simple, and the orchard typically runs daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Round out your fall road trip here and you will see why Minnesota orchards beat any city outing.
