A long layover usually means a hard plastic chair and a vending machine dinner. Some airlines see it differently.

They let you step out of the terminal and spend a day, or even a week, in a city you might never have planned to visit. Some programs come with discounts, hotel packages, or a flexible ticket rule.

Others simply let you build a stop into a bigger trip. The details change often, so the fine print matters.

Here are six airline and city pairings that can turn a boring connection into a mini vacation, with honest notes about what is and is not included.

Icelandair, Reykjavik, Iceland

Few airlines have built their whole identity around the stopover quite like Icelandair. Most fares between North America and Europe let travelers add a stop in Iceland, and the length depends on the fare purchased.

Economy Standard and Saga Premium fares currently allow stopovers of up to seven nights. Economy Flex and Saga Premium Flex can permit stays of up to 21 nights, while Economy Light is tighter at up to three nights.

Hotels are not included, so plan to book and pay for your own room.

Reykjavik makes a handy base. Hallgrimskirkja, the waterfront, and Harpa Concert Hall are all in the city itself.

With a little more time, day trips can reach waterfalls, geothermal areas, and the landscapes of the Golden Circle. That is a lot of scenery for what started as a simple connection, and it can be added without buying a separate ticket.

Finnair, Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki used to be a headline act for Finnair stopovers, especially for travelers linking Europe and Asia. The airline once promoted dedicated stays of several nights in the city.

Today, Finnair points travelers toward its multi-city booking tool, which can combine as many as six destinations in one itinerary. Helsinki can still fit into a longer journey that way.

Just do not assume a multi-day stay will automatically be free or priced like a standard connection.

The good news is that Helsinki is easy to handle in a short visit. The center is compact, so Helsinki Cathedral, Market Square, and Uspenski Cathedral sit close together.

Sauna culture is a big part of local life and can easily fill part of a day. If you have a bit longer, Suomenlinna sea fortress makes a popular excursion by water.

TAP Air Portugal, Lisbon, Portugal

Ten days is a long time to spend on a layover, and TAP Air Portugal allows exactly that. Eligible passengers can add a stop in Lisbon or Porto lasting between one and 10 days with no additional stopover charge on the ticket.

The airline also offers stopover passengers discounts and benefits through hundreds of partner offers. Anyone who wants to see more of the country can get 25% off eligible domestic TAP flights during the same trip.

Lisbon rewards even a quick visit. Alfama is a good place to wander, and the hilly neighborhoods are part of the fun to ride through.

Belem is another easy add, and a pastel de nata makes a fitting snack before you head to your final destination. Few stopover programs give you this much time and flexibility for so little extra planning.

Japan Airlines, Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo packs so much into one city that a layover there can feel like a tiny trip abroad. Japan Airlines supports multi-city and stopover itineraries, so stays in Tokyo or Osaka can be built into a larger journey.

JAL’s booking system treats stays of more than 24 hours as stopovers, and these can be entered with its multi-city feature. Pricing is the catch.

A stopover will not always cost exactly the same as a standard connection, since the final fare depends on flights, dates, and ticket rules.

Once you are in town, the list of options is long. Senso-ji, Shibuya, and Meiji Shrine are classic stops.

Shinjuku and Ginza neighborhoods offer plenty more to see for several days. JAL also highlights Osaka as another handy stopover city for anyone passing through Japan.

Qatar Airways, Doha, Qatar

Before booking a Doha stopover, check the price, because older advice calling these hotel stays free is out of date. Qatar Airways offers hotel packages through its Discover Qatar program for stays of up to four nights.

Current 2026 packages come at specially reduced rates. Prices vary by hotel category and market, so what you pay depends on where you start.

Even so, Doha suits a short stop well. Souq Waqif is a lively market area, and the Corniche runs along the waterfront.

Museum fans have two big options in the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar. All of these can fit into a brief visit before you head back to Hamad International Airport for the next flight.

Emirates, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai gets a double perk from Emirates, and the second one is easy to miss. First, the airline lets passengers build itineraries with a stop in Dubai using its multiple-destination booking option.

Whether that stop adds to the ticket price depends on the fare. Emirates says some fares permit stopovers with no additional charge, while others may involve extra costs or taxes.

For very long connections, eligible travelers may qualify for Dubai Connect. It includes complimentary hotel accommodation, airport transfers, applicable meals, and visa assistance when required and approved.

It is generally offered only when a shorter suitable connection is not available.

Outside the airport, Dubai has two very different sides. The Burj Khalifa represents the modern city, while the older neighborhoods around Dubai Creek offer traditional souks and abra boats.
